We all know that Brett Ratner is attached to direct Beverly Hills Cop 4, and that Eddie Murphy will be reprising his trademark role of Axel Foley.
For a few years there were rumors that the film would show the adventures of Foley in London, but I’m guessing that the filmmakers realized that the character is from Detroit and that he solves crimes in Beverly Hills, so he would just be London Cop. And that is a whole other franchise.
Well, now Latino Review have seen a script by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas for the new film and according to them - it’s not too good.
[Some Plot Spoilers Follow]
If this script is used, then film will begin with Foley’s friend Billy Rosewood (Judge Reinhold) throwing himself off a building. However, Axel knows that this is something that Billy just would not do. Returning to Beverly Hills for the first time in years,

The magical mechanical box that spews out Eddie Murphy comedies treats us this year with Meet Dave. The “Dave” of the title is actually an intergalactic human sized and shaped spaceship piloted by tiny little aliens, just like in Men in Black or, from the point of view of Trelane in “The Squire of Gothos,” the crew on Star Trek. There’s this tiny little Eddie Murphy Captain Kirk in charge of the crew of the Dave, and they explore Manhattan, on a mission to find a device that was sent down earlier to drain the earth’s sea that landed mistakenly in the fishbowl of the little boy who’s dad recently died… Sigh… was this how the pitch session went? Really?

Writer Frank Spotnitz and actress Gabrielle Union have reunited for a new procedural drama that’s being developed at NBC. Union starred in ABC's short-lived reworking of the classic series Night Stalker, which co-starred Stuart Townsend and Spotnitz executive produced during the 2005-06 TV season. In the untitled series Union will play a detective who must race to save someone's life before it's too late. Spotnitz and Union collaborated on the idea and the project will be produced through Universal Media Studios. Spotnitz's credits include The X-Files, as well as ABC Family's recent mini Samurai Girl. He also served as an executive producer on Robbery Homicide Division, Harsh Realm and the X-Files spinoff The Lone Gunmen. He also wrote and produced this past summer’s The X Files: I Want to Believe. Union most recently starred in the features Meet Dave and Tyler Perry's Daddy's Little Girls. On the small screen,

As Thanksgiving approaches, we've got the wild superhero Hancock crashing into shelves. While it might have been led by mega-star Will Smith, it didn't get much love from critics and certainly bowed in the shadows of some old-school, established superheroes. That being said, it's still Will Smith and is said to have a powerful start that just falls flat. Teamed with a bunch of solid special features, it's worth a glimpse. Rent it.
And then there's Eddie Murphy. In his latest wacky film, Murphy gets to play a human spacecraft for a bunch of tiny aliens. The DVD holds the obligatory extras -- gag reel, deleted scenes, alternate ending -- but I'd still say Skip it, even if the box office still gives the dude love.

I'm slightly surprised that we don't have more DVD options this week. After all, isn't it Black Frickin' Friday this week? Nothing against what we do have...Ok, that's not true; this is a really lousy week of new releases, at least as far as the recent theatrical fare is concerned.
If there's good news out of all of that, I guess it's that the next month is predictably stockpiled with big, big movies. And there is one legit heavy hitter this week, so perhaps we should stop complaining. (But really, it's the everything but the new movies that have my interest.)
Will Smith as a superhero. I mean, that's all you need for a summer movie, right? Trouble is, Hancock just isn't as good as it could be. I loved the surly superhero approach, but if there was a blockbuster this year that really lost it in the third act.

The summer blockbuster Hancock, starring Will Smith as a slacker superhero with a public-relations problem, leads this week's crop of new DVD releases. Also debuting today on DVD: Eddie Murphy's ill-fated sci-fi comedy Meet Dave; Vince Vaughn's ill-fated Christmas comedy Fred Claus; and the computer-animated, simian, and yes, also ill-fated, sci-fi comedy Space Chimps.
And just in case you forgot to set your DVR last weekend, 24: Redemption arrives on DVD today -- just two days after it premiered on Fox. Pick it up and watch Jack Bauer singlehandedly save sub-Saharan Africa. Let's see Bono do that!

This week includes some zesty releases both in the DVD and games areas. We'll focus on a few and list what else may be of interest. Will Smith flies into action in "Hancock," a somewhat different superhero flick which includes Jason Bateman, Charlize Theron, Eddie Marsan and Martin Klebba. There are a few variations of the product. Eddie Murphy starrer "Meet Dave" sees release on standard widescreen and Blu-ray versions. We can highly recommend this comedy for the whole family. It provides the laughs and the constant adventure keeps one interested for the duration of the film.

DVD Links: Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Hancock I posted my review of the Blu-ray edition of Hancock right here and it isn't exactly a favorable one. This movie, while having a great concept, just doesn't work and it all has to do with the script as it was presented on screen. I didn't read Vincent Ngo's original script though, and considering what David had to say about it when he asked whether it was too soon to remake Hancock it sounds like there is a potentially great story left on the table in an effort to release a toned down film. I know they are working on a sequel to the film and I have no idea what direction they plan on going, but a satisfying sequel could make this original more tolerable. However, right now, this film isn't worth your time. Criterion Releases

Torn between the voices in his head a tiny alien crew led by a high-strung, miniature version of himself and the world around him, Dave struggles to appear normal.

Universal Studios would like to revisit the Klumps once more and have put out an open call to writers for pitches for a third Nutty Professor film according to The Hollywood Reporter. Universal and Imagine Entertainment saw ox office success with two films based on the 1963 Jerry Lewis classic.
The previous two were tour de forces for Eddie Murphy and the studio would like the pitches to pick up on the threads from The Nutty Professor 2: The Klumps. The basic concept involved the overweight but kindly professor accidentally turning into a slim, obnoxious love machine and hilarity ensued.
The 1996 remake scored $270 million while the 2000 sequel found just $162 million in ticket sales. However, the desire for familiar properties trumps concern over eroding interest in such humor or Murphy, whose box office draw has been diminishing with disastrous career choices (last summer’s Starship Dave was a new low).

Let's be honest here: would you really want to see another sequel to "The Nutty Professor"? While I personally think it's completely unnecesary, the folks over at Universal think it's a great idea. Of course they do.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, the studio is already working on a third movie in the series, which kicked off in 1996 and starred Eddie Murphy as an overweight professor who develops a chemical that turns him into a slim but utterly obnoxious person.
Following the success of the first flick, a sequel entitled "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps" followed in 2000, which earned a little less money at the box office but still proved to be quite profitable.
Eight years later, someone out there thinks it's time to bring "Nutty" back. Universal is currently looking for writers to come up with a decent idea for the third installement, although Murphy is apparently not yet attached to return.

Eddie Murphy is not nearly the box office powerhouse he used to be-- at least according to Meet Dave's $12 million box office take-- and The Nutty Professor movies were ably parodied in 3 short minutes in the fake trailers in front of Tropic Thunder. So is there really room for those hugely successful movies to be revisited, 8 years after the sequel? Of course there is! The Hollywood Reporter is saying that Universal and Imagine Entertainment are sending out for screenwriters for a third Nutty Professor movie. Those of you with your script sitting at home that sends the Klumps on a vacation to Hawaii, send it along! Eddie Murphy isn't signed on, and won't be unless a script, director and production work out to his satisfaction. As unwilling as I am to see Murphy don a fat suit again, a third movie without him is even more unimaginable. Quite frankly
