Uncle Creepy's Blu Christmas Buyer's Guide

1 December 2008 3:33 PM, PST | From DreadCentral.com | See recent Dread Central news

With the holiday shopping season officially upon us, I figured it might be a good idea to start making some recommendations for the lucky horror-loving folks on your lists!

Being that Blu-ray has officially been accepted as the next step in home video entertainment, I expect that a lot of PlayStation 3's and stand-alone Blu-ray players are going to be pretty hot items this year, but what of the movies available for them? If you already own the DVD of your favorite flick, is there a need to replace it with a Blu-ray? I'm here to answer all of your questions in the first annual ...

Before we get into my picks, let's take a second to explain how I rated them. They're broken down into three categories:

Can't Miss -- Must Haves: These are the cream of the crop! The purchases that are guaranteed to bring a smile to someone's face.

'Justice League' Director Exposed to Kryptonite

1 December 2008 2:19 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The doomed-from-the-start Justice League of America movie has either suffered another blow, or it's now free to start over. According to Dark Horizons, the superhero adaptation has parted ways with director George Miller.

But appearing on a weekend chat show, Miller confirmed that he's off the project completely and he believes that if it ever gets going again, he expects it to be re-cast, which could mean no Adam Brody as the Flash and even more confusion about the identity of Wonder Woman.

I say good riddance. Not so much to Miller or even any of the actors, really, but rather just the idea itself. Despite the success DC Comics had with The Dark Knight, it's still not in the driver's seat as it relates to comic book movies. Jumping the gun on a bunch of standalone heroes in favor of throwing them all together is a bad idea.

What Were The Most Popular Movie Trailers of 2008?

1 December 2008 1:02 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Now that we've entered the final month of the year, look for our site (and several others) to spend some time looking back at 2008. We here at Cinematical will kick off our year-end festivities real soon, but in the meantime Yahoo Movies was first out of the gate with a list of the most popular movie trailers of 2008. Keep in mind this is only according to Yahoo's numbers and represents the most watched, not necessarily the best (we'll have that list later this month).

As expected, a good majority of this list is made up of big summer blockbuster-type stuff, and guess which flick leads the pack? Yup, the one with that damn bat. The top two (Dark Knight and Indiana Jones) don't surprise me in the least, but the next two are ... Twilight (3) and The Incredible Hulk (4)? Really? Those vampires even beat everyone's favorite boy wizard, Harry Potter, who

Is The Sherlock Holmes Set Cursed?

1 December 2008 5:50 AM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

Ok, so the Sherlock Holmes set hasn't witnessed any genuine disasters like The Dark Knight did, when they lost a stuntman during a routine stunt, or Quantum of Solace which saw a badly injured stuntman and an Aston Martin in a lake. But the British press is talking up a Sherlock Curse, after stars Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law both narrowly avoided death and injury on the set. The Sun is reporting that, for starters, Downey was knocked cold by a fellow cast member in a fight scene, when he was "accidentally caught on the chin by a thundering hook. He went flying and was out cold," according to an anonymous source. And yesterday, director Guy Ritchie and Law both had to flee an honest-to-God fireball when a gas tanker exploded on the set. Did anyone check to see if it was just Michael Bay was shooting in the

Satellite Nominees are an Embarrassment of Snubs

30 November 2008 11:22 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The International Press Academy announced their nominees for the 13th Annual Satellite Awards and it is a mixed bag of snubs across the board and further proof the idea of separating Drama, Comedy and Musicals is just about the dumbest idea around as they are Really reaching by including Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist as a comedy or a musical. I would even say Happy-Go-Lucky and Vicky Cristina Barcelona don't fit the category. What was so funny about Poppy being attacked by her driving instructor? Where was the comedy in VCB? Gimme a break. it's going to be even worse when the Globes nominate something like High School Musical 3 and Mamma Mia! instantly giving them some kind of credibility. However, category distinction aside the absence of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from all categories makes me wonder if any of these people even saw all the films. Take for

'Slumdog,' 'Milk' Lead Satellite Award Nominees

30 November 2008 10:25 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The nominees have been announced for the 13th annual Satellite Awards, presented by the International Press Association. It works very much the way the Golden Globes does (or is that do?), although there are awards in technical categories as well. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, December 14th in beautiful Century City, California.

The big news is probably that Meryl Streep has received nominations both Best Actress categories, for Doubt and Mamma Mia!, though I think most people would probably have assumed that much, given the weak year of performances (no offense to Kat Dennings, but does she really deserve a nomination for something based on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist; does the film deserve three?). Mark Ruffalo also got the double dip, which wasn't expected, for The Brothers Bloom and What Doesn't Kill You.

Elsewhere, The Dark Knight got passed over for Best Picture, nabbing nominations for both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger.

To the Bat Grave: Dark Knight's Secret Identity Killed

30 November 2008 2:00 PM, PST | From E! Online | See recent E! Online news

Bruce Wayne is dead! Oh, sorry: Spoiler Alert! Anyway, somebody better call Christian Bale with the news that writer Grant Morrison killed off millionaire playboy Bruce Wayne in a series of stories called Batman R.I.P. (which, as titles go, is pretty much a spoiler in itself). What happens? Bruce Wayne attempts to stop a villain who just may be Wayne's own father, someone we thought was dead already (see: the reason Bruce Wayne became Batman). There's a helicopter crash and, well, things are (at least) in flux for the Caped Crusader. Still, to be honest, we aren't totally worried about it (we're betting the billion dollars that The Dark Knight raked in will help keep Bruce Wayne...

Seven Clips from 'The Dark Knight' DVD

29 November 2008 6:04 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say a lot of you probably know that The Dark Knight is coming out on DVD here in about ten days. The biggest movie of the year (and for my money, the most successful modern box office success when you consider its competition both in and out of theaters and the fast turnaround for DVD releases) officially comes out December 9th, and it will no doubt be the biggest DVD release ever. I don't think that can even be questioned.

It's also good timing for the Oscar pushes for the film, Christopher Nolan, and Heath Ledger.

To get you back in the mood for Gotham City, Bruce Wayne, The Joker, and the rest of the Nolanverse, here are seven great clips from bonus materials added to the DVD. All of these videos came to us by way of Trailer Addict, though they

Having shared his future plans of another "The X-Files" movie, Frank Spotnitz now revealed that the development of the third "X-Files" film may depend on the DVD sales of "The X-Files: I Want to Believe". To Bloody-Disgusting, the popular sci-fi thriller series said about his belief of future film installment saying, "I think there very well could be more in the future. ...When the studio looks at the sales of the DVD that's when they will really decide to see if its worth risking."

On the disappointing result "I Want to Believe" attained at the box office, Spotnitz pointed out on the bad timing of the release. "We were all a bit disappointed, we had some indication that we were in for a rough time when The Dark Knight started to become the phenomenon that it is, and breaking records. McG Confronts 'Terminator' Rumors

28 November 2008 8:11 PM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

McG spoke to Total Film to address and dispel the four major rumors surrounding his forthcoming Terminator Salvation.

In clear language, he said that Ain’t It Cool News’ rumored ending was a fake. “That is not the ending. John Connor is not the machine. We did discuss that idea, but that is not the ending, I can say that right now.”

As to whether or not James Cameron blessed someone else directing his baby, McG said, “I did go to see James Cameron. He didn’t give us his blessing, but he didn’t shit all over our movie. When Jim was making Aliens, he was following the great Ridley Scott, so he knows how we feel.”

There was the issue about lead actor Christian Bale’s doubts about taking on the role of an adult John Connor. “I met Christian when he was shooting The Dark Knight. He

Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino Gaining Strong Oscar Buzz

28 November 2008 8:35 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Last Sunday I predicted that The Dark Knight would be a big Oscar contender because there wasn't anything else that was gaining strong buzz. Fellow critics had all seen the other big Oscar contenders like Doubt and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and were all saying "good but not great" things about them. However, it seems we forgot about one of them - Clint Eastwood's Gran Torino. Eastwood already had one movie hit theaters this year, Changeling, but it didn't fare too well at the box office or with critics. But numerous early reviews of Gran Torino have started trickling in are already proclaiming it as one of Eastwood's best performances and a definite Oscar contender. Could this be the big sleeper hit of 2008? First up, a reader at Hollywood Elsewhere sent a few comments over to Jeffrey Wells: "It's clunky and heavy-handed at times, but very effective.

Pick of 2008: The three best men's fashion spots

28 November 2008 2:42 AM, PST | From Boxwish.com | See recent BoxWish news

Last week, we took stock of the best women’s fashions that hit cinema screens in 2008 and agreed that it had been a good year for the ladies. But how did it fare for the fellas? Not too shabby, thanks for asking. This past year has seen a whole glut of classy chaps parade their goods on the big screen. From young ‘uns like Zac Efron in High School Musical 3: Senior Year working the check shirts and skinny ties of today’s trends to the more established gentlemanly look of James Bond’s formal suits in Quantum of Solace. The fashions have reflected all weathers – the wintry knitwear in Zack and Miri Make a Porno to the sunny beachwear of Forgetting Sarah Marshall and both sides of the law – from superheroes Tony Stark (Iron Man) and Bruce Wayne (The Dark Knight) to the underworld criminals in RocknRolla. On December 2nd Fox Home Entertainment will be releasing The X-Files: I Want To Believe on both DVD and Blu-ray. To help promote the release we chatted with writer-producer Frank Spotnitz who reveals his plans for another X-Files, if 20th Century Fox were to ever give the go to another sequel. Frank Spotnitz explains how they were pretty disappointed with the box officie numbers when X-Files hit theaters this past July. "We were all a bit disappointed, we had some indication that we were in for a rough time when The Dark Knight started to become the phenomenon that it is, and breaking records. The Dark Knight is a history making film at the box office, and we came out with our little dark film a week after. It was disappointing to be sure. But the film made something like 20 million domestically and close to 50 million overseas."

400 Screens 400 Blows - A Thanksgiving Movie Prayer, 2008

27 November 2008 6:02 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

400 Screens, 400 Blows is a weekly column that takes an in-depth look at the films playing below the radar, beneath the top ten, and on 400 screens or less. I'm thankful for Rachel Getting Married (300 screens), for making me feel as if I were at an excruciating wedding without actually having to be there, and for making me feel as if I knew the extraordinarily wounded lead character, Kym (Anne Hathaway), no matter how monstrous she acts sometimes. But most of all for making me feel something.

I'm thankful for The Dark Knight (345 screens), for being like a 1940s film noir, reflecting the utter despair we feel about the world in 2008, but for making it entertaining and making us feel as if there's still a tiny scrap of hope left. Mainly, I'm thankful for movies that took on despair as a theme, but didn't show it.

I'm thankful for smart villains, like Heath Ledger's Joker.
