Satellite Nominees are an Embarrassment of Snubs

30 November 2008 11:22 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

The International Press Academy announced their nominees for the 13th Annual Satellite Awards and it is a mixed bag of snubs across the board and further proof the idea of separating Drama, Comedy and Musicals is just about the dumbest idea around as they are Really reaching by including Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist as a comedy or a musical. I would even say Happy-Go-Lucky and Vicky Cristina Barcelona don't fit the category. What was so funny about Poppy being attacked by her driving instructor? Where was the comedy in VCB? Gimme a break. it's going to be even worse when the Globes nominate something like High School Musical 3 and Mamma Mia! instantly giving them some kind of credibility. However, category distinction aside the absence of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button from all categories makes me wonder if any of these people even saw all the films. Take for

'Slumdog,' 'Milk' Lead Satellite Award Nominees

30 November 2008 10:25 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

The nominees have been announced for the 13th annual Satellite Awards, presented by the International Press Association. It works very much the way the Golden Globes does (or is that do?), although there are awards in technical categories as well. The awards will be handed out on Sunday, December 14th in beautiful Century City, California.

The big news is probably that Meryl Streep has received nominations both Best Actress categories, for Doubt and Mamma Mia!, though I think most people would probably have assumed that much, given the weak year of performances (no offense to Kat Dennings, but does she really deserve a nomination for something based on Nick & Norah's Infinite Playlist; does the film deserve three?). Mark Ruffalo also got the double dip, which wasn't expected, for The Brothers Bloom and What Doesn't Kill You.

Elsewhere, The Dark Knight got passed over for Best Picture, nabbing nominations for both Christopher Nolan and Heath Ledger.

Satellite Awards snub 'Benjamin Button' and 'The Dark Knight' for best picture!

30 November 2008 9:49 PM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

Uh-oh! Kate Winslet's vote-splitting has officially begun! The Satellite Awards just nominated Kate Winslet in the best-actress race for "The Reader" instead of "Revolutionary Road," thus ignoring her campaign to put the "Reader" role in supporting. However, both films are up for best drama picture, but there are several, big curious omissions in that race: "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "Doubt" and "The Dark Knight." The latter snub is especially bizarre considering Christopher Nolan is up for best director. The other contenders for best drama pic: "Slumdog Millionaire," "Frost/Nixon," "Milk" and — surprise — "Frozen River." The pix up for best comedy/musical: "Happy-Go-Lucky," "Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist," "Vicky Cristina Barcelona," "Tropic Thunder," "In...

Seven Clips from 'The Dark Knight' DVD

29 November 2008 6:04 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

If I were to hazard a guess, I'd say a lot of you probably know that The Dark Knight is coming out on DVD here in about ten days. The biggest movie of the year (and for my money, the most successful modern box office success when you consider its competition both in and out of theaters and the fast turnaround for DVD releases) officially comes out December 9th, and it will no doubt be the biggest DVD release ever. I don't think that can even be questioned.

It's also good timing for the Oscar pushes for the film, Christopher Nolan, and Heath Ledger.

To get you back in the mood for Gotham City, Bruce Wayne, The Joker, and the rest of the Nolanverse, here are seven great clips from bonus materials added to the DVD. All of these videos came to us by way of Trailer Addict, though they

See Batman die

28 November 2008 7:21 AM, PST | From TotalFilm | See recent TotalFilm news

DC Comics has killed Batman. To find out how, head for the gallery to your right. The comic-book, penned by Arkham Asylum's Grant Morrison (a key influence on The Dark Knight) shows Batman being shot and apparently killed by... well, read the pages to find out the identity of the killer. But suffice to say, it's bonkers. Could this momentous moment in comics influence the third Batman flick? Dark vision It'd certainly fit in with the dark vision of Christopher Nolan's previous Batmans - and it'd be a good way for Nolan to not have... .

Oscar Predictions: A Second Take on Thanksgiving, All Top Eight Categories

26 November 2008 11:06 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

First off, Happy Thanksgiving and thanks for checking out the second batch of Oscar predictions. We had a Ton of good comments on the last installment and things have certainly changed since then as a large group of critics finally got their first glimpse of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Stephen Daldry's The Reader has now been seen and buzz surrounding Revolutionary Road really seems to be getting ... well ... buzzy. With both Milk and Australia in theaters you can now make up your own mind on those two as I really liked Milk and really disliked Australia. I also thought I should tell you I have an exclusive interview with Darren Aronofsky, director of The Wrestler, coming up next week as he made a stop here in Seattle this past Tuesday. If you haven't watched the trailer for that one yet do so right now. As I told Darren,

"The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian" - 3-Disc Blu-ray Digital Copy review.

26 November 2008 2:46 PM, PST | From Movie Jungle | See recent Movie Jungle news

An incredible amount of features are waiting for the keen buyer of Disney’s “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” in a 3-Disc Blu-ray Digital Copy. When comparing this with the first film - “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe” pushed past the amateur acting skills of its leading cast thanks to a dedicated screenplay by South African screenwriter Ann Peacock. The second film is a darker offering and one unsuited to children. There is just too much violence to recommend a parent allow their younger child access to this. The “Harry Potter” films seem to be in the same rhythm of late; this was started by Christopher Nolan’s interpretation of “Batman Begins” and the recent follow-up “The Dark Knight” which is a gargantuan leap to the dark side since the earlier films. Additionally, the screenplay by helmer Andrew Adamson, Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely

Feature: Five Rules For Making an Indie Superhero Movie

25 November 2008 2:03 PM, PST | From ifc.com | See recent IFC news

By Matt Singer

The figure of the superhero does not lend itself to independent movies easily or readily. While three of the top five grossing movies of 2008 center on the escapades of eccentrically dressed and extravagantly empowered individuals, there's a distinct lack of caped crusaders or men of steel for the arthouse crowd. Indie filmmakers may be the most qualified to tackle the spandex set in terms of imagination -- which may be the reason so many former members of their ranks, from Christopher Nolan to Guillermo Del Toro, have produced some of the genre's most memorable entries -- yet they have a special brand of kryptonite to contend with: low budgets.

With that in mind, I've watched as many indie superhero movies as I could find and assembled this easy-to-use list of five rules guaranteed to make yours a massive success. You can thank me later with some points on the gross.

For Your Consideration: The Dark Knight

24 November 2008 6:08 PM, PST | From ScreenRant.com | See recent Screen Rant news

Warner Bros. has launched an ad campaign for The Dark Knight, lobbying for Oscar nominations in 15 different categories. A campaign for 28 different people, in front of and behind the camera, for those little golden statues for this year’s Academy Awards.

In the latest edition of Variety and various places around the internet you’ll more than likely find advertisements for Tdk as we approach nomination season for the annual Oscars night. From “Best Sound Mixing” to the prized “Best Picture,” Nolan and Co. hope to grab some well-deserved statues. Having delivered the highest grossing film this year, Warner Bros. is looking to help in that effort and spend some of that money on the heroes that brought The Dark Knight to the big screen.

Vying for a number of different awards, nearly every category it is eligible for has been suggested. The aforementioned “Best Picture” accompanies “Best Director” and

Bryan Singer Talks 'Superman' Sequel and 'Valkyrie'

20 November 2008 12:32 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

It's a bird, it's a plane ... no wait, it's Bryan Singer dodging more Superman sequel questions!

Pretty soon Bryan Singer will be doing a big publicity push for Valkyrie, and when that time comes look for folks to be bombarding him with Superman sequel scenarios ("Well what if you half-produced it and starred as a villainous mutant Hitler who wears an eye patch -- is that an option?"). After all, things are still way up in the air regarding further installments for a franchise that's ... let's just say stalled at the moment. MTV managed to snag a quick chat with Singer regarding Valkyrie and you betcha they snuck a Supes question in there. On whether he'll be directing, Singer says, "At the moment, I can't really talk about that. I wish I could. From my perspective, I'm going to take a brief pause. This movie has taken a long time,

Oscar Predictions: My First Stab, All Top Eight Categories

20 November 2008 1:30 AM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

So far this week I have added The Wrestler, Frost/Nixon and Australia to my lists of films seen and tomorrow I will see Defiance capping off a week in which I will see eight films in the span of four days. Yet, just know as you read my first official list of predictions for the 2009 Oscars there are still a few films I have yet to see. They include the following: Doubt Che The Curious Case of Benjamin Button Defiance Gran Torino Last Chance Harvey Nothing but the Truth The Reader Revolutionary Road Seven Pounds It's not a long list, but considering half of those films will be found on one or more categories on my list and the other half could potentially replace some of the titles I have listed, it is best to know this is not a list set in stone. I plan on updating it

Angelina Jolie has been nominated to play Catwoman in a future Batman movie, by The Dark Knight star Aaron Eckhart.

Eckhart, who played Harvey Dent/Two Face in the last installment of the legendary superhero franchise, is rumoured to return in the next Batman movie, and he would love to act alongside a lycra-clad Jolie - if director Christopher Nolan chooses to intoduce the feline baddie.

He says, "I thought that was a fantastic idea."

And he's convinced any Batman movie with Jolie involved, would eclipse those already made.

Eckhart adds, "When I read that, I felt like all of our records that we made (would) be broken if she did Catwoman."
