Dancing Finale Draws Season's Best Ratings

27 November 2008 1:36 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

The season finale of ABC's Dancing With the Stars contest, won by actress-model Brooke Burke, drew the best numbers for any regular show of the season Tuesday night, averaging 20.58 million viewers over its two hours. The show's audience built steadily, beginning with 18.75 million at 9:00 p.m., then rising to 19.41 million at 9:30 p.m., 21.99 million at 10:00 p.m., and peaking at 22.17 million for the announcement of the winnert during the final 10:30 p.m. half-hour. Amazingly, CBS drew solid numbers despite the strong competition. After attracting 18.16 million viewers to NCIS at 8:00 p.m. -- making it the top show in that hour -- the network's The Mentalist registered 15.91 million viewers against the first hour of Dancing, while Without a Trace recorded 10.3 million. NBC, meanwhile, continued to struggle. Even its Law & Order franchise faltered, hitting a series low with just 8.55 million viewers.

25 November 2008 8:25 PM, PST | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

CBS' police procedural series, "NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service", may get a spin-off treatment. It has been reported by reliable sources to EW's Michael Ausiello that the CBS network is in talk to produce a spin-off for "NCIS" series.

Further information on the spin-off adds that a "new crop" of naval detectives will likely be introduced through one of the episode of "NCIS" later this season. Moreover, the same sources also say that "NCIS" spin-off is possibly to be premiered as early as next fall. In addition, Ausiello noted that this CBS' new project will probably put on hold the network's "Criminal Minds" spin-off.

In the meantime, "NCIS" official representative has not given any detailed information and valid statement about the spin-off. Only a short statement has been given by the series' insider saying that there is no final decision yet about its premise and setting. "It's still in the early stages,

Casting Bites: Yeardley Smith Goes to 'High School' & More

17 November 2008 3:15 PM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

Just a month ago, we learned that Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis were heading back to High School -- a rather unique comedy about a high school valedictorian (Matt Bush) who gets high with the school stoner (Sean Marquette), and then tries to use his smarts to get out of an upcoming drug test. Rather then messing with his own results, he schemes to get the entire school stoned to beat the system. Brody's the drug dealer, Chiklis is the principal, and now The Hollywood Reporter posts that Lisa Simpson, aka Yeardley Smith, will play a homeroom teacher while Luis Chavez (Crash) plays a druggie friend of the valedictorian.

Meanwhile, Variety reports that Navy NCIS actress Cote de Pablo is making the jump to the big screen with Scott Speedman's The Last Rites of Ransom Pride. The Calgary Herald describes it as "a violent ransom about a woman trying

NCIS Continues To Pull Big Ratings

17 November 2008 1:38 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

For the second week in a row, a repeat of CBS's NCIS has drawn more viewers than any other offering on Friday night. The result -- the two episodes averaged 11 million viewers each -- is particularly extraordinary given the fact that it had replaced The Ex List, which was yanked off the network's schedule because of low ratings. Last week, an all-new episode of NCIS on Tuesday night attracted 18.8 million viewers. Today's (Monday) New York Times observed that the top ratings for the drama have come despite the fact that the series is six years old, lands on few magazine covers, enjoys almost no love from critics and never gets a sniff of a nomination for prestigious awards." In an interview with the newspaper, writer-producer Shane Brennan, credited with "breathing life" into the franchise, said, "The Emmys don't have a category for us," but if it did it would have to be something like "hugely popular but not critically acclaimed dramas."

Three-Way Ratings Tie

12 November 2008 10:27 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

For the first time in memory, ABC, CBS and NBC wound up in a ratings tie for first place last week among adults 18-49, the key group for advertisers. The tie was attributed to interest among young adults in coverage of Tuesday's presidential election. Fox, which did not provide full-time coverage on its broadcast network -- but did on its Fox News cable network -- was the odd man out. CBS remained the top-rated network among overall viewers, although its coverage of the elections ranked last. The low ratings on election night was offset by enormous ratings for an overrun of the NFL game on Sunday, followed by 60 Minutes. Perhaps most surprising is that CBS placed two Friday-night shows in the top 20, Numb3rs and a repeat of NCIS, which was moved into the slot previously occupied by the canceled Ex List. Many TV experts had concluded that all of the networks had written off Friday nights as they previously had written off Saturday nights. For the week, CBS averaged a 7.0 rating and an 11 share. ABC took second place with a 6.6/11. NBC finished third with a 5.5/9, while Fox trailed with a 3.6/6.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. 60 Minutes, CBS, 11.5/18; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.2/17; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 11.1/16; 4. Sunday Night Football, NBC, 11.0./18; 5. Dancing With the Stars (Wednesday), ABC, 10.2/16; 6. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.1/15; 6. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 10.1/15; 8. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.3/14; 9. SNL Presidential Bash '08, NBC, 8.7/13; 10. CSI: Miami, CBS, 8.5/14; 10. ABC Election Coverage, ABC, 8.5/12.

5 November 2008 9:56 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

CBS continued its season-long dominance of the Nielsen ratings last week among overall households and in the advertiser-desired demographic of adults 18-49. The network posted a 7.2 rating and a 12 share for the week. ABC, helped once again by its two editions of Dancing With the Stars, came in second with an average 6.4/10. Fox, which received a boost from Game 5 of the World Series, which was divided into two nights because of a rain delay, came in third with a 5.8/9. But NBC drew low ratings, averaging a 4.8/8, with most of its regular lineup, except for Sunday Night Football.

A Rerun Writes "X" On Ex

3 November 2008 10:09 AM, PST | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

A strong showing Friday night by a rerun of CBS's long-running NCIS in the 9:00 p.m. timeslot previously occupied by the struggling Ex List series appeared to spell doom for the new series. The Ex List concerns a woman who is told by a psychic that she will find lifelong happiness with one of her ex-boyfriends or live out the rest of her days loveless. The only remaining question appeared to be, will CBS allow the producers to wrap up the plot? Ratings for the show, never strong to begin with, had dipped each week since the show debuted in September. By last week, the number of viewers had dropped to 5.33 million. By contrast, the NCIS rerun attracted 11.21 million and was the highest-rated show of the night. It effectively eliminated the ratings dip between CBS's one-hour Ghost Whisperer at 8:00 p.m. (9.41 million viewers) and its one-hour Numb3rs at 10:00 p.m. (10.61 million). Meanwhile, NBC continued its downward spiral, posting series lows for every show that it aired Friday night.

World Series A Winner For Fox

29 October 2008 2:30 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Fox's coverage of The World Series may have seen a 25-percent ratings drop from last year, but it was good enough to give the network a lead among adults 18-49 last week and also give it its best numbers since the last edition of American Idol ended in May. The four games between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays all wound up among the top ten among the younger demographic most desired by advertisers, but only two landed in the top-ten among overall households. CBS remained ahead in viewers and households, placing five shows in the top ten. ABC placed three shows in that list. But NBC once again struck out. With no Sunday Night Football on its schedule, it drew its lowest overall ratings of the season. In the tight race between the NBC and ABC nightly newscasts, NBC came out ahead, thanks presumably to Brian Williams's serialized interviews with Sarah Palin. NBC Nightly News averaged 8.41 million viewers for the week versus 8.07 million for ABC's World News. CBS remained a distant third with 6.2 million viewers.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 12/18; 2. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 11.7/17; 3. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.7/16; 3. NCIS, CBS, 10.7/17; 5. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 10.1/15; 6. The Mentalist, CBS, 9.6/14; 7. Criminal Minds, CBS, 9.5/14; 7. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 9.5/14; 9. World Series Game 4, Fox, 9.3/15; 10. CSI: NY, CBS, 9.2/15; 10. (Tie) World Series Game 1, Fox, 9.2/15.

It is the first hourlong scripted series to bite the dust this season. For the third straight week, CBS has dominated the primetime ratings, scoring solidly not only among viewers in general but also among adults 18 to 49, the demographic group most prized by advertisers and a group that had previously eluded the network. CBS Has Its Ups And Downs

15 October 2008 10:36 AM, PDT | From Studio Briefing | See recent Studio Briefing news

Shares of CBS Corp. may be way down in the overall market slump -- they had dropped 4.30 percent at midday trading today (Wednesday) -- but the company's Nielsen ratings have rarely risen higher this year than they did last week. CBS captured four of the top-five programs, including No. 1, CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which drew 23.5 million, and, for the first time, beat ABC rival Grey's Anatomy among adults 18-49. In fact, CBS, often regarded as the old-folks network, drew more younger viewers than any other network last week. ABC managed to provide some solid competition with Dancing With the Stars and its new drama Life on Mars, but NBC continued to trail, failing to place a single show in the top ten. (Its highest-rated program was Sunday Night Football, which came in at No. 13.) For the week, CBS averaged a 6.9 rating and an 11 share. ABC placed second with a 6.3/10. Fox placed third with a 5.0/8, while NBC trailed with a 4.4/7.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:1. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, CBS, 13.9/21; 2. Dancing With the Stars (Monday), ABC, 12.0/18; 3. Criminal Minds, CBS, 10.2/16; 4. CSI: NY, CBS, 10.1/17; 4. NCIS, CBS, 10.1/15; 6. Dancing With the Stars (Tuesday), ABC, 10.0/15; 7. Desperate Housewives, ABC, 9.8/15; 7. Grey's Anatomy, ABC, 9.8/15; 9. CSI: Miami, CBS, 9.2/15; 10.
