Full Feature Film Nominees List for 2008 Annie Awards

1 December 2008 6:37 PM, PST | From Aceshowbiz | See recent Aceshowbiz news

On Monday, December 1, the International Animated Film Society, Asifa-Hollywood, has come out with an announcement of 2008 Annie Awards' nominations. Dominating the list is "Kung Fu Panda" with 17 nods for the animated features category as well as for video games category.

In the feature film category itself, this DreamWorks Animation comedy has collected in total 16 nods. One comes from the production category, that is Best Animated Feature, whereas the rest from the individual nominations. For the Best Voice Acting title, "Panda" has managed to put three of its voice actors, Dustin Hoffman, James Hong and Ian McShane, to compete with voice actors from "Wall-e" and "Bolt". Additionally, it also gives directors John Stevenson and Mark Osborne a shot for Best Animated Film Director.

Beside "Kung Fu Panda", other movies collecting multiple nominations for Annie are "Bolt" and "Wall-e". "Bolt" has earned 9 counts and "Wall-e" has landed on 8 nods. Both of which

Wall-e scored eight nominations, while Bolt claimed five.

Will 'Kung Fu Panda' dropkick 'Wall-e' at the Annie Awards?

1 December 2008 2:10 PM, PST | From Gold Derby | See recent Gold Derby news

Today's Annie Awards nominations could be the first sign that "Wall-e" is less of a lock for the animated feature Oscar than we thought. Although the Pixar picture was hailed by critics, ranking as one of the top-rated films of the year, it managed only eight nods from those truly in the know about the art of making animation — the International Animated Film Society. Just as "Kung Fu Panda" trumped it in the worldwide box office race ($633 million to $488 million), so too did that DreamWorks feature prevail here, reaping a staggering 17 nominations. Both films are up for the top award of best animated feature, competing against "Bolt" (five noms total), "Waltz...

Panda picked up a healthy amount of noms in categories such as Character Animation, Character Design, Music, Production Design, Storyboarding, Voice Acting and Writing. In each of those categories it was either nominated while Bolt and Wall-e were not or secured multiple nominations giving it the outright nomination lead by 8. Could this be a sign of a Panda-over-wall-e Oscar upset? The nominees are listed below and you can check out the official award site here. Best Animated Feature Bolt (Walt Disney Animation Studios) Kung Fu Panda (DreamWorks Animation) $9.99 (Sherman Pictures/Lama Films) Wall-e (Pixar Animation Studios) Waltz With Bashir (Sony Pictures Classics/Bridgit Folman, Les Films D'ici, Razor Films) Best Animated Home Entertainment

'Wall*E' Leads DVD Sales

1 December 2008 11:04 AM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

Heading into the holiday season, home video companies are hoping for a surge in shopping as sales for standard and Blu-ray discs combined to drop with a 9% increase in the third quarter compared with #Q 2007.  There remain rays of hope with Wall*E topping the charts for the week ending November 23. In second place in sales, but first in rentals, is Ben Stiller’s Tropic Thunder.

As one would expect during a holiday period, kids fare did very well with Kung Fu Panda taking first the week prior with 117,954 units sold according to Billboard.  What was a surprise, though, was the sales and rental strength of Hellboy II: The Golden Army. This bodes well for encouraging Universal to add the third film in the series to Guillermo del Toro’s crowded schedule.

A disappointment, according to The Numbers, has been Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull has disappointed with 4.8 million in sales.

Review: Bolt

27 November 2008 8:51 PM, PST | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

While hardly a groundbreaking original, Bolt is one of the more engaging non-Pixar computer animated features to be released by Disney. At the very least, it's a massive leap forward from the rather dull Chicken Little. Much of the credit should go toward producer John Lasseter, a wily animation veteran who reportedly had a major influence on the production.

It's Truman Show goes to the dogs in this tale of adorable pooch Bolt (voiced by John Travolta), a loving canine who believes he's a super dog. You see, Bolt is in the movies, but the joke's on him as he has no idea that his apparent super strength is the product of cinematic trickery. He actually believes that his powers are real. Bolt gets a reality check when he's thrown into the real world and soon, through the aid of streetwise alley-cat Mittens (voiced by Susie Essman) and hyperactive hamster

Jolie Denies Pregnancy As Baby Rumours Increase

25 November 2008 11:03 PM, PST | From wenn.com | See recent WENN news

Angelina Jolie has been forced to deny she is pregnant again following U.S. tabloid reports suggesting the actress is expecting her fourth biological child with Brad Pitt.

Speculation surrounding a reported pregnancy has dogged the Hollywood supercouple in recent months - rumours which were denied by the Oscar winner's publicist earlier this month.

U.S publication In Touch magazine - who broke the news Jolie was expecting twins earlier this year - has most recently claimed Jolie is pregnant again, reporting that the actress announced the happy news to a waiter in a London restaurant after he tried to pour her an alcoholic drink.

But the Tomb Raider star's representative, Geyer Kosinski, refutes the reports, telling Usweekly.com the claims are "not true".

However, Jolie continuously refused to confirm she was pregnant with her twins, Knox and Vivienne - even when she was sporting a huge pregnancy bump. The news was later confirmed at the Kung Fu Panda premiere in Cannes in May after co-star Jack Black revealed all during a TV interview.

Downey on 'Avengers', Rejected 'Twilight' Script, 'Terminator' Poster and Much, Much More

25 November 2008 2:59 PM, PST | From Rope of Silicon | See recent Rope Of Silicon news

(from top left) New Terminator Salvation poster, Criterion logo, Whatever Works, Dolph Lundgren, I am Legend, He-Man, "Star Trek" comic, Tim Blake Nelson in The Incredible Hulk It's been a long time since there were enough stupid online stories to create a Rumor Mill Roundup, but thanks to fanboy excitement and a lack of stories to copy out of Variety and The Hollywood Reporter we have a fresh batch of inane items from around the Internet to dazzle the eye and illuminate the senses. Let's get started shall we... First off, Sony Pictures is handling the international distribution of Terminator Salvation and as a coming out prize they bring a Flash animated motion poster picturing the destruction of Los Angeles as it turns into the robotic face of a Terminator. You think that is just a coincidence? Guess again. Check it out here. Rumor: Sylvester Stallone hints at the possibility

Review: Bolt

21 November 2008 7:02 AM, PST | From Cinematical.com | See recent Cinematical news

I'm trying to muster up some enthusiasm for Disney's latest animated film, Bolt. It's cute. It has funny pigeons. My eight-year-old niece is going to like it, especially since Miley Cyrus is involved. It's the first non-Pixar Disney feature produced by John Lasseter, who directed the Toy Story movies and Cars. It's got Hollywood jokes in it, including a director voiced by James Lipton, and a comically pushy agent. And yet I never thrilled to the story or the characters; I wasn't half as amused as I'd been by Kung Fu Panda, a film for kids I saw earlier this year.

The story should sound familiar to anyone who grew up with Lassie movies or other animal-road-trip films, but with a Hollywood twist. The title character, a cute dog called Bolt (John Travolta), is fiercely attached to "his person," teenage Penny (Miley Cyrus). Bolt saves Penny's life on a regular

Movie Review - 'Bolt'

20 November 2008 11:02 PM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

Bolt

Featuring the voices of John Travolta, Miley Cyrus, and Mark Walton

Directed by Byron Howard and Chris Williams

Rated PG

Disney’s Bolt should not be confused with a Disney Pixar film. It’s high praise to suggest that it could be, and while it lacks the remarkable writing of the very best Pixar movies, the quality of the animation and the entertainment value is not far off the pace.

Actually, Bolt may help Disney level the playing field with Pixar, which is already getting much stronger competition from DreamWorks with films like Kung Fu Panda. This is fast-paced, funny, creates memorable characters, and offers as much for adults to enjoy as it does the wee ones.

Bolt (John Travolta) is the star of his own primetime show, on which he saves the planet every week with his adoring co-star, Penny (Miley Cyrus). He believes he’s blessed with superpowers,

He-Man film has a director

20 November 2008 6:12 PM, PST | From The Hollywood News | See recent The Hollywood News news

Well, by the power of bleedin' Grayskull. It seems that Joel Silver's He-man movie has a director (finally) attached to it. According to the ever reliable source that is Latino Review, Kung Fu Panda helmer Kevin Stevenson will take the reigns to direct the film for Warner Brothers.

Apparently Stevenson recently pitched an insane idea to the studio, who subsequently dug it, and brought him on board. My guessing is that this puppy will start shooting next year for a Summer 2010 release. We'll keep you up to date on it.

More DVDs to Hit Shelves on Sunday Instead of Tuesday

20 November 2008 3:42 AM, PST | From GetTheBigPicture.net | See recent Get The Big Picture news

We wondered a couple of weeks ago why in the wide, wide world of sports the Kung Fu Panda DVD was being released on a Sunday instead of the more traditional Tuesday. It seemed odd because it fell between Election Day and Veteran's Day, which I guess could be hindrances, but is making it available when people don't know to look for it a better approach?

Hollywood might think so. Video Business reports that Paramount and Sony might do away with the big Tuesday releases, going instead with a practice that carries the annoying name "Alterna-dates."

Paramount is keeping an eye on Sunday. This makes sense from one perspective, if you're going to make it an industry standard: It's easier to advertise. You know how you get the Best Buy circular and it has smokin' deals on movies...that you have to wait 48 hours to buy? Now you won't have to,

Video: 4 Bolt Clips

20 November 2008 2:21 AM, PST | From cinemablend.com | See recent Cinema Blend news

2008 may go down as the best year for animation in history. After a summer of Wall-e and Kung Fu Panda, it's hard to believe any other animated film could match up, but Bolt does. It's the first instant classic from Disney in at least a decade. They're more than due. I know a lot of you are obsessed with seeing Twilight this weekend, but consider giving Bolt a shot instead. You won't regret it. Below we've got four new clips from Bolt. Don't miss one of the best movies of the year:

By the Power of Grayskull! He-Man Lives

19 November 2008 7:06 PM, PST | From Comicmix.com | See recent Comicmix news

The Latino Review is reporting that Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson will direct a live-action He-Man and the Masters of the Universe for producer Joel Silver.

He-Man was Mattel’s line of action figures from the early 1980s which spawned a two season animated series that was composed of 130 short episodes. It spawned a female counterpart She-Ra.  A 1987 live-action adaptation was made with Dolph Lundgren in the lead. DC Comics also produced comics featuring the property including an issue of DC Comics Presents where Superman and He-Man teamed up.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe was revived for the Cartoon Network and new adventures ran a single season from 2002-2003.

Justin Marks wrote a treatment for a film called Greyskull, named after the source of He-Man’s power, but the project crumbled and was considered dead until Stevenson gave a dazzling pitch.

Fred Watches Kung Fu Panda on Blu-ray

19 November 2008 10:05 AM, PST | From www.canmag.com | See recent CanMag news

The opening 2D sequence of Kung Fu Panda looks absolutely gorgeous on Blu Ray. With such crisp lines, the characters appear distinct from the backgrounds, even though it's a single plane.

On Blu-Ray: Kung Fu Panda

The 3D look is typical CGI animation. The added details make it appear realistic, like bumps in the stone, fur and whiskers, nicks on steel swords. The China setting provides many unique landscapes and architectures to present in colorful clarity. Po's tummy jiggles in subtle bounces. Marble and vases shine.

Kung Fu Panda Director John Stevenson Taking On He-Man?!

19 November 2008 8:42 AM, PST | From firstshowing.net | See recent FirstShowing.net news

Woops! It looks like Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe isn't as dead in the water as we first thought. Our friends at Latino Review picked up another scoop saying that the film is very much alive and well at Warner Brothers due in thanks to John Stevenson, who might yet direct this live-action version of He-Man. Who is he? His only official directing credit is Kung Fu Panda (which he shared with Mark Osborne), although he does have an extensive background in storyboard art and animation previously. He apparently gave a presentation to the execs at Warner Brothers as well as Joel Silver that impressed the hell out of them. Is Stevenson really the right guy to bring us a live-action He-Man movie? I'm not too sure... In October, we ran an article saying that the He-Man movie, titled Grayskull: The Masters of the Universe, was pretty much dead

Does He-Man Have a Director?

19 November 2008 2:30 AM, PST | From TheMovingPicture.net | See recent TheMovingPicture news

Back in October the folks over at Latino Review were reporting that Warner Bros’ The Masters of the Universe flick, which Joel Silver is developing, was no longer happening. It seems this might not be the case as the same site now says the flick is happening and may even have a director attached. According to Lr, Kung Fu Panda director John Stevenson got the job after he made an impressive pitch to Silver. He-Man, the heroic character in the Masters of the Universe franchise, was a huge hit in the 80s, spawning a successful toy line and animated series. The new take on the character was scripted by Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li), although, if this rumor is true and Stevenson did pitch Silver, Marks and his script may no longer be involved. Before Kung Fu Panda, which Stevenson co-directed with Mark Osbourne, the filmmaker directed
