Yes and no. Although Journey to the Center of the Earth/Voyage au centre de la Terre (1864) was written by French science fiction writer Jules Verne [1828-1905], the movie doesn't actually follow the book. The basic premise of the movie is that Jules Verne's books actually happened and are not just works of fiction. The actual book, Journey to the Center of the Earth, is used by the main characters as a guideline for their own voyage.
No, it will actually only be in 3D where theaters have a Real D digital projector. So, IMAX will not present this film in 3D. Otherwise the movie is also available in 2D at normal theaters.
The story is essentially identical, but the 3D version was shot using a slightly different script to emphasize its 3D effects. The 3D version is also rated PG-13 (for some bloody sci-fi violence), in contrast to the PG the 2D version received.
