Another cool discovery at this year's Afm was loads of art for Sopon Sukdapisit's latest horror film, Coming Soon, a Thai film that asks, what kind of scenes in a horror film scares you the most? When a ghost appears totally unexpectedly? When the main character does not see the ghost sneaking up behind him? When at the very end you find out that the main character was actually a ghost all along? But none of this compares to the feeling of arriving home alone and suddenly being stuck by a feeling of deja-vu that you are reenacting the very same scenes in the horror movie you just saw! Inside you can check out all the goodies from the co-writer of Alone and Shutter's latest.

Proving once again that Thailand is leading the charge when it comes to Asian horror cinema, three of Thailand youngest horror directors teamed up with a veteran director and all contributed a short of their own for the anthology 4bia, or Phobia, in case the tricky use of numbers for letters got beyond you. Two of the names should already be familiar to the Twitch family. Banjong Pisanthanakun and Parkpoom Wongpoom are the makers of the original and much, much better Shutter as well as last year’s Audience Award Winner, Alone. They were joined by one of their contemporaries, Paween Purijitpanya, who directed Body #19, and, shooting a horror film for the first time, Yongyoot Thongkongtoon. He also happens to be the mentor of the other three directors. I cannot help but think these lines from A New Hope. Indulge me for a second.
Darth Vader-The circle is now complete.

"The answer is not in the avoidance of remakes. The plain fact is that remakes of very good original films sometimes fail because they have not been remade by people as talented as those who made the first versions." -- David O. Selznick, 1956.
The famed producer of Gone With the Wind and Rebecca was on a downward slide when he wrote the above in a memo to the president of 20th Century Fox. Selznick spent much of the 1950s repackaging and selling his earlier productions to studios, pocketing tidy fees for his efforts. The modern-day equivalent is Roy Lee. As explained in a profile in The New Yorker: "What Lee does for a living sounds simple enough, but no

You may not know his name, but I can virtually guarantee that if you’re at all a fan of recent Asian horror film you know his work. Sophon Sakdaphisit worked as a writer on both Alone and the original Thai film Shutter - since subjected to a very bad remake - and he is stepping into the director’s chair himself with Coming Soon.

Our man Nomad and crew have been providing pictures and scoops from Comic-Con fast as lightning, but I thought you might also like to hear about some of the goings-on at this year’s event. Last night was what they call “Preview Night,” and if it’s any indication of what the next few days are going to be like, I suggest everyone who’s attending wear comfortable shoes and get ready for a lot of standing in line.
Preview Night is a chance for industry professionals, members of the press, and four-day pass holders to get the lay of the land, formulate a game plan for the rest of the week, mingle and shop a bit, and then head out to a couple of parties. The proverbial calm before the storm if you will. And judging from the attendance, it looks like we’re in for a veritable downpour of humanity!

It’s all about the traps this week. Check out what horror flicks are hitting DVD on Tuesday, July 15th, 2008...
Asylum (2008)
Directed by David R. Ellis
It seems all the madness surrounding Ellis’ last effort, Snakes on a Plane, popped something in his head and he decided the only way to follow it up would be with the most generic, bland, impotent kind of horror film. Enter Asylum, the story of a group of new kids at college who find out their new dorm is adjacent to the former stomping grounds of a doctor who got off on conducting experiments on kids their age. Lameness follows. Be sure to read our Asylum DVD review for more! Buy it here!

It annoys the shit out of me when a film is announced in the trades but nothing’s said about what it actually will be about. Take the story on The Colony in this morning’s Variety; a long list of genre names is attached to it, but all we know is that it’s an eco-horror tale. How am I supposed to make a snap judgment about the quality of the film with so little information?
The Colony is being set up by Participant Media with Vertigo Entertainment and Room 101 producing, specifically Steven Schneider (Paranormal Activity redux) for Room 101 and Roy Lee (The Eye, Shutter) for Vertigo.
Right now I don’t even think a script’s been written, but the film will be coming from a pitch from Stacy Title (Snoop Dogg’s Hood of Horror director) and Jonathan Penner (one of the Hood writers). We

Some pretty big news hit the web tonight, only there's nothing to be too excited about - yet. Although details are being kept under wraps, two horror tycoons have joined forces to bring us a new tale of horror. Participant Media (The Visitor) has set up eco-horror tale The Colony, based on a pitch by Stacy Title and Jonathan Penner. Steven Schneider of Room 101 (read his ongoing blog here) and Vertigo Entertainment's Doug Davison and Roy Lee are producing. Gabriel Mason will exec produce the project. Schneider is producing "Details" for Paramount, "The Flock" for Warner Bros. and "Paranormal Activity" for DreamWorks. Vertigo most recently produced "The Eye" and "Shutter," and its upcoming projects include "Tale of Two Sisters" with DreamWorks, "The Strangers" with Rogue/Universal and "Quarantine" with Screen Gems.
